Redefining alumni relations at London South Bank University

"We use the report produced by Alterline as the foundation for all our work."
Olivia Rainford, Head of Alumni Relations

With a renewed focus on the University’s mission of improving the social mobility of its students and to help re-position Alumni Relations as an important contributor to the University, Alterline were commissioned to run an extensive research project with internal stakeholders and alumni.

"We create five or six thousand alumni every year…. but to what extent are we actually creating fans?"
Senior university stakeholder

London South Bank University (LSBU) are keen to do more to ensure that alumni benefit from their connection with the institution and are also part of the everyday life of the university and integral to the students’ experience.

LSBU stakeholders see alumni as crucial in increasing students’ employment prospects, collaborating with research, promoting Schools, recruitment and promoting the university.

Understanding what stakeholders want from alumni is one thing but how alumni see the institution, how they view their student experience and what they are prepared to do to help are crucial questions for any future strategy.

Break-Stat-v1

Our research explored alumni’s university experience, their university connections, their level of interest and motivation for involvement, the role of personal values.

We analysed the impact of these (and other) factors on the alumni experience and produced a report that laid out a clear, evidence-led strategic direction.

The research findings, analysis and recommendations have been, and continue to be, widely circulated. They have informed a business case for increased resources and proved instrumental in reshaping the department’s positioning, visual identity and the editorial content of its communications.
