Creating accommodation fit for future students’ needs

Whilst investment into purpose-built student accommodation continues to increase, it is a challenging time to predict future students’ needs and demand, especially in the context of the rise of commuting.

Another of our recent research projects found that the decision to commute is a complex one. For some students, the decision was purely financial, but others may have been interested in moving into accommodation if options had been available to fit their interests and meet their needs.

Our new collaborative research project, aimed specifically at student accommodation teams will provide a deep, focused understanding of the accommodation preferences and needs of future students.

Why join this project?

  • Secure robust evidence to support accommodation investment and development, application processes and residential services
  • Gain practical insights to inform the way you communicate with prospective students about your accommodation offer
  • Identify opportunities to develop future student friendly options, add-ons or processes, beyond the physical space requirements
  • Understand differences through demographic lenses including widening access groups and prospect commuters

What will the project explore?

The quantitative and qualitative research materials are based around the following crucial questions:

How does is work and what are the costs?

The strategic national collaborative insight costs £3,950 + VAT to join in readiness for the final report and other outputs being available in late September as well as to join the online findings and recommendations workshop in October and includes:

  • Fresh, quantitative evidence will be captured through a survey with 1,000 prospective Undergraduate Home students, including those who want to move away, stay at home and who are undecided
  • Fresh qualitative evidence will be generated through an online qualitative community with 25-30 prospective Undergraduate Home students to explore the emerging themes in more depth
  • A smart, succinct, highly visual report, with practical recommendations to help you develop your accommodation offer to meet the needs of future students, accompanied by a data dashboard so you can explore the data most relevant to you in more detail
  • We’ll bring together participating institutions in online events to shape the project and to discuss the findings and ideas for action

The project commenced in June and will complete in October, so please get in touch now to arrange to talk if you’re interested to hear more about how you can join us, and the 3 universities who are already confirmed to participate.
